A Tribute to Ralph McQuarrie in Action Figures

George Lucas created the story, John Williams created the music and it was Ralph McQuarrie who created the look of Star Wars. Sadly the first of the great three creators has passed this last week so as a tribute I'm finally posting my McQuarrie Concept action figures. It's not the complete collection from the series but my goal was to collect all the characters from this painting of his which I've recreated in the photo above.

Another recreation here, this time of this painting. I've seen interviews with Anthony Daniels in which he talks about seeing this painting for the first time and feeling an instant connection with the character of C-3PO.

This incarnation of Luke/Leia was at stage in the writing process were Luke and Leia were the same character, I often think of it as female Luke.

Han and Chewie above and Artoo and Threepio below. I find it really interesting that this version of Han would have been first painted by Ralph in the early to mid-seventies yet looks almost exactly the same as George Lucas did in the nineties, its almost like it George's idea of what a man should look like.

And finally another photo of the General Pharl McQuarrie action figure, Ralph's walk on role in the Empire Strikes Back. May the force be with you Ralph.

A fairly well accessorized figure, comes with bowcaster, two vibroblades and a removable hat just like in the show.

Seriously though if I wanted the complete run of TCW annuals I'd have bought them myself, I keep these ones as it's a nice reminder of previous Xmas's and hopefully she'll keep the tradition going.

Posted this figure before but as I'm sure I mentioned I'm a big fan of the character so figured I'd repost it. It's turned out a lot better the second time and I'll definitely be revisiting a bunch of my figures and try to do them a bit more justice.

I really desaturated this one in an attempt to make the photo a bit colder than I'd normally post and I'm gonna make an artist's excuse here and say it's to match Thrawn's cold and calculating personality. Last photo today is the Admiral pledging allegiance to the Emperor.

Some good articulation on this figure and she can pull off a convincing running pose, however with her mouth fixed in that scream its not the best figure for recreating movie scenes, still I had to pick up this figure as my girlfriend has the costume.

EU: Aaron Allston X-Wing Novels

Following on from my post last month, here are the three books in the X-wing series that were written by Aaron Allston. The books still heavily feature Wedge but instead of Rogue Squadron they follow Wraith Squadron.

I didn't find the new characters as compelling as the Rogues but the stories Allston wrote are still good. Book 7, Solo Command, ends exactly where Courtship of Princess Leia starts, which is cool however there are continuity issues between the two books.

My brother asked me what I wanted for xmas, I simply said 'any unnamed trooper'. I think this guy looks great, felt a little bad for removing him from his card as its a SDCC exclusive but I've opened rare figures before.

I'm really impressed with the detail on the shoulder plate and hopefully this photograph does it some justice. Finally a shot of all my Senate clones together.

Snowtrooper Action Figures

I've posted a Snowtrooper before but it was a while ago and I recently picked up a second one, so I'm taking the opportunity to revisit this figure.

Was really happy with how this photo turned out especially the contrast between Vader and his troopers. Finally for this post I attempted to redo a photo from an older post when I first shot my AT-AT, I think it works a lot better now that its not just one trooper in there.

Clone Shock Trooper Action Figures

I absolutely love the paint work on these figures, really cool characters. I actually thought I'd blogged them already and was a little surprised I hadn't.

A couple of shots here of the clones based on there appearance in ROTS, above is a photoshop as I only have one of the senate pods. Below is the clones escorting Palpatine on Mustafar as they search for Lord Vader.

In this last shot I added in a red clone ARC, even though he's not a shock trooper I thought it looked cool with him there.

ARC Heavy Trooper Action Figure

This first pic was inspired by the cover for the young reader novel Epic Battles and I had to use the power of photoshop to bring this one to you as I actually only have one of these figures. Once I was already cheating by making a multiple exposure I figured I may as well throw in a few simple lighting effects too.

This is the weapon the figure comes with and it's what he can be seen using in the original Clone Wars microseries.

Finally a bit more work with gels, was struggling to avoid the lens flare so in the end decided to make this photo a little more artistic and deliberately make it part of the image.

General Grievous Action Figure

Above is General Grievous grabbing Ahsoka as he does in TCW episode 'Duel of the Droids', really happy with how the lighting turned out in this one, I think it's pretty believable that the green glow is coming off the lightsaber.

This figure is a nightmare to pose and balance so normally I display it riding the STAP as shown here.

The arms can be swapped out to give him his four arms, unfortunately this about the only decent pose you can get from him.

Lastly another TCW reference, this time its from the Malevolence trilogy where everything was lit red from the nearby planet.

300th Blog Post

18 months, 50,000 views and 300 posts on I'm still having a great time creating this blog. Originally I started this as a place to show off my collection but over the last year and a half I've gotten a lot more confident in my work and have really enjoyed recreating scenes from Star Wars, so to say thanks to all the visitors and followers of this site, as I wouldn't have bothered this long without you, I've decided to revisit my top three most viewed posts and try to do these figures a bit more justice.

3 - Galen Marek aka Starkiller

This image is based on the cover art to the first Force Unleashed game. Originally when I posted this figure the image was just Starkiller standing alongside Juno and Kota, you can see it here.

2 - Darth Revan and Darth Malek

Very simple photo here of the apprentice bowing before the master but with the red lighting I thought it was a strong image. My original post of these two can be found here.

1 - Pre Vizsla

This image showing Obi-Wan and Vizsla squaring off is a recreation of a scene from the TCW episode, 'The Mandalore Plot', one of my favourite episodes of the TCW so far and I'm glad to see that other people find the Pre Vizsla figure cool as well. Here you can see the original post, this was one of the first times I attempted to pose figures in a scene and I think you'll agree this blog has come on along way since.

I still have a lot of my collection to share but going forward I hope to have a much bigger emphasis on recreating scenes and other dioramas, thanks again for following and check back soon!

In my opinion these are the absolute best Star Wars spoofs, I like a lot of different comedy and naturally love any Star Wars jokes but none are quite as entertaining as this trilogy, you get a really strong impression that the Robot Chicken team are just as big fans of the 'Wars as any of us.

Any fans of either the Republic Commando games or the books will appreciate how cool it is to have a full Delta Squad, I love these characters and these figures are awesome.

The top pic is based on the start screen from the game and is a slight cheat in that I took two photographs, one where I lit the Commandos from above/behind and one where I lit them from the front to make their visors reflect the light. Then I simply photoshopped the two together.

Finally parted with the cash to get the Jabba the Hutt figure, complete with Salacious Crumb and Oola the dancing girl. I took the opportunity to go back and re-shoot some of my older figures now that I have Jabba and enlisted my girlfriend Shannen to take the actual photographs while I did the composition.

After watching Return of the Jedi together this morning for inspiration we settled on a handful of shots and scenes from the movie we wanted to recreate.

No surprise that these are by far the most watched DVDs I own, the gold packaging was a preorder exclusive and normally this boxset was silver.

If you've never seen the features on this bonus disc I highly recommend getting your hands on a copy, it includes 'Empire of Dreams' a three hour documentary that covers the making of all three original trilogy movies that unfortunately doesn't appear to be coming on the Blu Ray set.

Isard stands out from other Imperial Officers thanks to her all red uniform and her odd eye colours as seen above. Isard was the main antagonist in the Rogue Squadron X-wing novels and comic books written by Michael Stackpole.

'Purchase of the Droids' Action Figures

Some of the oldest figures in my collection, this battlepack is from the Power of the Force series in the 90's and is based on the droid purchase scene in ANH. I like the Uncle Owen and C-3PO figures but the Luke Skywalker is one of the ugliest sculpts I've seen.

One really cool thing about this battlepack is the way the packaging transforms into a display, most battle packs that have packaging like this are totally cardboard, however this pack comes with a plastic base as seen above and much higher quality cardboard backing than comes with modern battlepacks.

VIDEO: Action Figure Collection Setup 2011

Finally back and able to post again, keep an eye here for several new posts in the coming days but for now enjoy my latest video attempt, similar to last years time-lapse this shows the setup of my action figures in my new apartment however rather than simply speeding up the video footage as last year, a new photograph was taken every time an action figure was added to the display then I strung them all together in this video with five photographs each second.

My Entire Collection Packed Away

Currently I'm in the process of moving house and I'm unable to do any photography so decided to share a quick snap of my entire collection all boxed up in a reference to my first ever blog post.

Hopefully shouldn't be more than a couple of weeks before I'm set up in the new place and can post again.

Lego Star Wars Models

My last post today covers all actual Lego sets in my collection, starting with this awesome Republic Tank.

It's by far the biggest Lego set I have and comes with two Clone Troopers.

One the right is Republic Torrent fighter from TCW. I was given a box by a friend that contained all these smaller models.

Left is an AT-RT complete with a Clone Trooper.

Right of this text is STAP being driven by a cool looking battle droid.

This one I think is biggest stretch in this series, its General Grievious's starfighter but I think it could've been better.

On the right is Stormtrooper riding a speederbike, I think its the best in the set even if it should really be a scouttrooper.

Final model from the box was this TIE Fighter on the left.

Last but not least is the man himself, Boba Fett, the chain has broken off but this was originally a keyring given out with pre-orders of the first Lego Star Wars video game.

After the Lego Star Wars TV special this weekend I decided to do a few posts today of my Lego Star Wars collection. Starting here then with the video games. Only just started playing the third one this morning, so far it's a nice improvement over the first two games and can't wait try it in multi-player.

Jaina Solo Action Figure

Daughter of Han and Leia as well being the twin brother of Jacen Solo. Like the figure of Jacen I posted a few weeks back this is based on Jaina's appearance in New Jedi Order books. Pretty cool that she has a pink lightsaber.

These two Royal Gurads are the main characters of the Crimson Empire comic book series.

Above in mostly black is Carnor Jax and below in mostly red is Kir Kanos.

Obi-wan Kenobi Jigsaw Puzzle

Slightly unusual product here, its a 100 piece jigsaw puzzle of an image of Kenobi from the current Clone Wars series however it comes with a galactic heroes Kenobi based on the original Clone Wars micro series, most likely Hasbro had an excess of these when this product was put together.

A'Sharad Hett Action Figure

This is A'Sharad Hett from the Republic comic series, Hett's father had been a legendary Jedi Knight who left the order to become a Tusken Raider, Hett was trained to be a Jedi by Ki-Adi Mundi and was a general in the Clone Wars. After surviving Order 66, Hett returned to Tatooine and rejoined the Tuskens.

Possible spoilers here for anyone who hasn't read the Legacy comics. Many years later A'Sharad Hett reappeared in the galaxy as the Sith Lord, Darth Krayt, shown alongside Hett below. While Hett doesn't have a particularly big role in the Republic comics, the story of Krayt is worth reading Legacy for.

R2-D2 Bobblehead

These were being given away free with a Star Wars game or DVD in one of my old jobs, of course I had to make sure I got one for myself. It's a bobblehead but its of a much higher quality than those things tend to be, its hard to tell but the whole chassis 'bobbles'.

I've had this vehicle almost a year but have been putting off blogging it because due to its size it proves very difficult to photograph with my current setup, thankfully I got a fellow blogger to come and assist for the evening, you can check out her work here.

To go with the AT-AT I have a few different figures, above and below is General Veers and a couple of AT-AT drivers.

Next I keep this Luke Skywalker figure permanently hanging from below, inside the vehicle is a button that can be used to make Luke repel up to the belly of the walker.

This figure has been posted before but I wanted to also show off the inside 'play area' on the AT-AT so only fitting I pop a Snow Trooper in there.

Again these figures have been posted quite recently as well but I wanted to try and give some sense of scale to this thing.

Since this is my 250th post and last week was the one year anniversary of this blog I decided to something a little bit different with this one. Over the last month I've taken a photo on my phone every time I've worn a piece of Star Wars apparel.

I wouldn't call these shirts a collection exactly as clothes wear out and get replaced, think of this post as more of a snapshot of my current Star Wars clothing.

Thanks again to all my followers, it's been a very fun year blogging my collection and I have had great opportunities to interact with some awesome Star Wars fans.

Clone Trooper Army Builder Action Figures

In case you're thinking I've gotten really good at posing Clone Troopers overnight, this figures have very limited articulation and essentially fixed in these positions.

These figures all came together in a three pack that I've seen on ebay actually comes in a variety of repaints however they tend to go for a little more money than I like to spend on my figures but I would still like to collect a bunch of them for dioramas.
